eSIM in Japan: good to know
Japan has some of the best mobile coverage in the world. Travel eSIMs for Japan connect to NTT Docomo, KDDI (au), SoftBank, or Rakuten — Docomo has the widest reach in rural areas and mountains, while all four are excellent in cities. You'll stay online in most subway tunnels and on the Shinkansen.
Physical tourist SIMs at Narita or Haneda cost noticeably more than the same data bought as an eSIM before you fly, and airport counters can have queues. Almost all Japan travel eSIMs are data-only, which is rarely a problem: Japanese contacts use LINE, and calls over WhatsApp or FaceTime work fine on data.
Common questions
Which Japanese network should my eSIM use?
For cities, any of them. If your trip includes the Japanese Alps, Hokkaido's countryside, or smaller islands, prefer a plan on NTT Docomo — it has the broadest rural footprint.
Do I need to register with my passport?
No. Japan's ID rules apply to local SIM contracts, not to travel eSIMs, which technically roam on Japanese networks. You can buy and activate before you land.
Will 5G work in Japan?
Yes in and around major cities, where most plans marked 4G/5G will pick up 5G. Outside urban areas you'll be on fast 4G, which comfortably handles maps and video.
Can I hotspot my Japan eSIM to a laptop?
Most Japan plans allow tethering — check the hotspot column on each plan card above. Unlimited plans sometimes throttle speed after heavy hotspot use, so read the plan's fair-use note.
